Homeless Solutions, Inc. Awarded $200,000
to Sustain Affordable Housing Efforts

Dan McGuire and HSI President, Dr. Elizabeth Hall accept grant
funding from the Bank of America Charitable Foundation.

Homeless Solutions, Inc. is thrilled to announce that we have been named as a 2009 New Jersey Neighborhood Builder® and will receive $200,000 in unrestricted grant funding and participate in Bank of America’s Neighborhood Excellence Leadership Program® with other nonprofit leaders from 45 communities across the country and London.  New Jersey SEEDS in Newark was also named as a grant recipient.

HSI President, Dr. Elizabeth Hall, says, “We are honored to have been selected as a New Jersey Neighborhood Builder ®. This funding will enable us to have a tangible impact on affordable housing in our area, and it will help change the lives of men, women and children as they move into stable, safe, energy-efficient and affordable housing while they work in New Jersey to grow our economy.”

The Bank of America Charitable Foundation supports nonprofits in New Jersey, providing unrestricted funding to address critical social issues through the bank’s Neighborhood Excellence Initiative (NEI). The program, which is helping to sustain nonprofits during this challenging economic time and increase their long-term viability, is investing $20 million globally this year in addition to the more than $90 million committed over the last five years.

“Bank of America is supporting the New Jersey community through the Neighborhood Excellence Initiative and other lending, investing and community development programs that address critical social issues and align with our corporate social responsibility efforts,” said Robert Doherty, President, Bank of America New Jersey. “In our current economy, communities need our support more than ever, and this program is designed to give that support through the effective combination of partnership, leadership development and flexible funding.”

Bank of America Corporate Philanthropy
Building on a long-standing tradition of investing in the communities it serves, Bank of America this year embarked on a new, ten-year goal to donate $2 billion to nonprofit organizations engaged in improving the health and vitality of their neighborhoods. Funded by Bank of America, the Bank of America Charitable Foundation gave more than $200 million in 2008, making the bank the most generous financial institution in the world and the second largest donor of all U.S. corporations in cash contributions. Bank of America approaches investing through a national strategy called "neighborhood excellence" under which it works with local leaders to identify and meet the most pressing needs of individual communities. Bank associate volunteers contributed more than 900,000 hours in 2008 to enhance the quality of life in their communities nationwide. HSI Wins Governor’s Award!

On Wednesday, September 23 HSI President Dr. Elizabeth Hall was honored to accept the Governor’s Excellence in Housing Award at the Fifteenth Annual Governor’s Conference on Housing and Community Development in Atlantic City.  HSI’s Abbett Avenue Apartments were recognized as an Outstanding Affordable Housing Development.  According to Marge DellaVecchia, Executive Director of the NJ Housing and Mortgage Finance Agency, the goal of the award is to “recognize projects and professionals that are on the cutting edge of innovation in the field of affordable housing.”

The Apartments consist of one, two, and three bedroom units for very low, low, and moderate income tenants and are in a transit friendly location.  The development exceeds the requirements of the state’s Affordable Green Building Standards and has also received a Smart Growth Award from New Jersey Future.

Since the grand opening in October 2008, twelve working families, including retail workers, office staff, and other service sector employees, have made their homes here.  From one tenant’s perspective, “Living in the Abbett Avenue Apartments has changed my life.  My family now lives in a safe place that we can afford, and my children have a stable home for the first time in quite a while.  This is truly a new beginning for us, and we couldn’t be happier.”

Our municipal and funding partners for the Abbett Avenue Apartments were critical in helping us to make dreams a reality for our tenants, and they include:

  • The William E. Simon Foundation
  • The Boye Foundation
  • United Way of Morris County
  • The Hyde and Watson Foundation
  • The Jockey Hollow Foundation
  • Enterprise Community Investment, Inc.
  • Morris County HOME through MC Community Development
  • Town of Morristown

Thank you and congratulations to all!

An Amazing ARTventure

Monday, September 21 was the day of HSI’s 2nd Annual Women’s Day of Adventure – an ARTventure at the Morris Museum in Morristown.  Attendees enjoyed breakfast, created bracelets and scarves for themselves and shelter guests, and shared a scrumptious lunch – it was a wonderful day for all, and the funds we raised will go in support of the shelter programs and services.

Thanks so much to everyone who made the day such a success –

The 9th Annual Dream Builders' Bash...
bash 09
9th Annual
Dream Builders' Bash
Friday, March 27, 2009
The Madison Hotel,
Convent Station

We're happy to report that HSI's 9th Annual Dream Builders' Bash was a wonderful evening - filled with dining, dancing, and friends. Our silent and live auctions, bracelet raffle, and giant puzzle were exciting, and one of our former guests joined us and shared the heartwarming story of her journey. We were also thrilled to be able to honor one individual and two organizations who have been crucial HSI supporters over the years -

Candace Weeks
The Community Foundation of New Jersey
Porzio Bromberg & Newman P.C.

Thanks to our generous sponsors, attendees, volunteers and supporters we were able to raise almost $140,000 in support of HSI's programs and services. Our heartfelt appreciation to all!

An Easter Treat from the Deltas

Last March, HSI’s kids received a terrific treat – the women of a graduate chapter of Delta Sigma Theta hosted a wonderful Easter party for them at our Transitional Housing Program facility.  There was egg dying, an egg hunt, and refreshments galore!

The Deltas are a group of more than 200,000 predominately black college educated women whose purpose is to provide assistance and support through established programs in local communities throughout the world.  Members of this chapter of Deltas have been supporting Homeless Solutions since 1993 – they’ve volunteered at both the shelter and THP.

Thank you to all of the Deltas who give so much of themselves to make the world a happier place for children in need.

Cuts for a Cause

On Tuesday, May 5th the owner and staff at Aura Salon and Spa in Morristown presented a very special offer for friends of Homeless Solutions, Inc. – these talented stylists provided free cuts to anyone making a minimum $20 donation in support of HSI programs and services.   It was a great opportunity to get a fabulous hair cut and support Homeless Solutions, Inc. at the same time!

Thanks so much to Frank Campanaro and his staff at Aura and to our many friends who participated!

The Jets' Party with HSI Children

Jets player Brandon Renkart offers tips to some aspiring players.

Jets player Cody Spencer enjoys the afternoon with party attendees.

HSI Development Director Pam Palumbo chats with
Julie Mangini, former Jets Head Coach Eric Mangini,
and HSI President Dr. Elizabeth Hall.

Former Jets Head Coach Eric Mangini and his wife, Julie, hosted a holiday party for 50 HSI children on December 13 at the Atlantic Health Jets Training Center in Florham Park and provided a wonderful afternoon of food, presents, and fun. Jets players and coaches attended and spent time playing with the children, which was the biggest thrill of all. Thank you so much to the Manginis and to all the players and coaches who participated in the event!

Three Cheers for Adventurous Women!

HSI’s first event in our new Women’s Day of Adventure series was held on Monday, September 29, and a wonderful time was had by all.  A Shot in the Woods and a Walk in the Wild at Hudson Farm in Andover was an exciting day of sporting clay shooting, hiking, dining, and spending time with old friends – and making new friends!  The best part, though, was how generous these adventurous women were in support of HSI.   Thanks so much to all who came and participated, to our fabulous event committee, and to all of our sponsors!

Stay tuned to find out what next year’s adventure will be…
